First plant babies of the year...

My first seeds have sprouted - the Candytuft - the package said 10-15 days for germination, and it only took 3. I chose Candytuft because they are drought tolerant, and grow well in less than ideal soil conditions. I plan to put them around the rocks in my perennial gardens which are under fairly large trees that suck up all the water around. They also have sentimental value to me because my mom has them in her garden, and they have always been one of her favourites...so hopefully now I will have a garden full!!

I also started my Black Pansies - but no germination yet, and the Lupines will go in tomorrow.

It's fun to see growing plants at this time of the year. Are you growing them under lights, or in your windows?

I just sowed some violas and pansies yesterday and read something on the packages which maybe explained my problems in past years. Did you know they like to be in dark for germination? I wish you luck with your seeds. I've never grown candytuft, though have seeds of it stored in the basement!

It's good to hear from fellow northern gardeners who aren't out there in the garden yet...and for some time...we're calling it warm at -17C these days...

i usually germinate my pansies in the dark - I have had better luck this year than last year though. And, the candytuft was a bust - they germinated - but are really quite leggy. So I have left them to go crazy in the tray - I'm not sure what I will do with them

I'm starting a lot from seed this year, too. I've had a few things that didn't sprout though... Good luck!
